Good morning,
This is the first issue of Morning Light, a brief weekly dispatch from our studio. We'll share things we've been thinking about, links worth your time, and occasional notes on what we're building.
We started in 1978, editing 16mm film by hand. Since then, we've ridden every technology wave from video to digital to cloud to AI. We've learned a few things along the way, and we figure some of it might be useful to share.
These letters will be short. Your attention is valuable; we won't waste it.
Worth Your Time
Various sources, ongoing
Everyone's asking whether AI will replace creative professionals. We've been through this before with desktop publishing, with digital photography, with web design. The answer is always the same: it replaces the people who don't adapt, and amplifies the people who do.
Our own experience
In a world obsessed with disruption, there's something to be said for people who remember what didn't work the first three times. Pattern recognition isn't just about data it's about having been there.
The BrightBorn philosophy
We've been refining this idea for decades: sophistication isn't about adding more. It's about knowing what's essential. Every frame, every line of code, every word should earn its place.
A Brief Observation
We've noticed something interesting about the current moment: everyone's racing to adopt AI, but almost nobody's asking what took us decades to learn that the tool doesn't matter if you don't know what you're trying to make. We learned patience in the darkroom. We learned precision from splicing film. We learned iteration from writing code that had to actually run. AI is powerful, but it's still just another tool. The question remains the same as it was in 1978: what are you trying to say, and why does it matter?
From the Studio
We've just launched BrightBorn the umbrella that brings together nearly five decades of creative and technical work. Three domains, one philosophy: brightborn.group (the parent), brightborn.media (creative work), and brightborn.digital (technology).
We're accepting projects in film/content production, platform development, and AI integration. If you're working on something interesting and need partners who've seen it all, we should talk.
Until next transmission,
Tim & Tom
